Summer Travel Legal Tips
If we learned anything about traveling from the Griswold Family in National Lampoon’s Vacation, it was that we should be knowledgeable about the destination and prepared for any emergency. So here are some travel legal tips for someone getting ready for a summer trip to Wally World or another favorite tourist trap.

Know the local laws in each state you’ll be driving through.
Some states have a hand-held ban on using cell phones, while some offer age-based restrictions. Almost every state has a restriction against texting while driving. Regardless of the law, we would like to politely suggest that you leave your phone alone while on the road.
Excessive window tint can be a valid reason for a traffic stop in many areas, and the legal limit varies by state. If you are paying for after-market tinting, you might pay attention to those rules if you sometimes go on road trips.
Keep photocopies of your passport and credit card information at home.
We know this isn’t necessarily legal advice, but it is a good practice for those traveling far from home for vacation.
Leave a copy of your current Will and Power of Attorney with a family member or friend.
Do you not have a Will or Trust? Then, schedule a consultation with a lawyer immediately.

Here are some quick guidelines for what to do if you get in a car wreck while on vacation.
- Stop
- Call the police
- Identify the other driver and potential witnesses
- Only report the facts
- See a doctor
- Contact an attorney
As a side note, ensure you are driving with valid car insurance and that your driver’s license is up to date.
Don't Drive While Impaired
Impairment can take many forms. First, of course, you should never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. But you should also pull over for the night if you are overly tired or have health issues that might affect your judgment or ability to drive.
Consider your travel times.
While you might not be able to alter your vacation days, you may be able to avoid traveling through metro areas during rush hour. Also, be aware of times when your vision may be limited because you are driving into the sun.
Ensure that your vehicle is in good driving condition before you go.
Check your tire pressure, headlights, tail lights, and maintenance lights.
Make memories!
While we certainly learned the importance of being knowledgeable about your destination and prepared for any emergency from Clark Griswold, we also learned the importance of making memories with our families.
