What should I know about holidays and DUIs?

With the Fourth of July around the corner, it is a good time to review your risks of getting a DUI if you go out to celebrate the holiday. You and other Missouri residents may also want to know the best ways to avoid drunk driving consequences.

Holidays like Independence Day are especially challenging for law enforcement to address, since there will be heavy crowds and traffic during the celebrations, in addition to people drinking large amounts of alcohol, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While there is nothing wrong with including alcohol in your holiday celebrations, it is a good idea to realize that law enforcement is likely to be on the watch for suspected drunk driving activity, and police may also set up sobriety checkpoints around town during the Fourth of July.

You may reduce your chances of being in an accident or receiving charges by taking the following precautions:

  • Designate a sober driver or take a taxi or Uber home.
  • Also bring non-alcoholic beverages to the festivities.
  • Limit your drinking and avoid getting “blackout drunk.”
  • If you are holding a party at home, do not let anyone drive drunk and consider letting them stay over until they sober up.

The NHTSA reported 237 alcohol-related traffic deaths over the Fourth of July holiday in 2017, which accounted for 39% of all traffic deaths that holiday. You may avoid fines, jail time and injuries by being aware of the risks and making smart choices regarding your alcohol consumption. If you are facing charges, you are entitled to a fair defense.
