Reckless drivers continue to plague Missouri

If you are like most people in Missouri, you are more than aware that driving after consuming alcohol is dangerous. The state of Utah has even lowered its legal blood alcohol limit for drivers to 0.05 percent based in part on the recommendation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Another dangerous choice too many drivers make is to exceed the speed limit. These two factors tragically contribute to numerous deaths every year.

NHTSA statistics show that every year between 2014 and 2017, the number of fatalities associated with accidents involving speeding or drunk driving increased. In 2014, speed was a stated factor in 267 deaths in Missouri and then 309 the following year. In 2016, 328 people were killed in crashes involving a speeding driver. That number jumped again in 2017 to 346. Drinking and driving killed 205 people in Missouri in 2014 and 221 in 2015. Alcohol-related fatalities numbered 247 in 2016 and then 254 in 2017.

This statewide trend is seen in Jackson County as well. In 2014, 21 people died in crashes involving excessive speed. In 2017, 49 fatalities were associated with speeding. Alcohol claimed 19 lives in the county in 2014. In 2017, drunk driving was attributed to 39 vehicular fatalities in Jackson County. Despite strong public awareness and education campaigns, it seems that some people simply refuse to consider the lives of others.
