What to know about filing taxes after divorce

If you are a recently divorced Missouri resident, your life may be undergoing considerable change. You may, for example, be adjusting to living in a new place, or you may find yourself grappling with having your children in your home only part of the time, as opposed to all the time. Divorce brings with it inevitable change, and while this holds true with regard to family relationships, it also holds true when it comes time to file your taxes.

Per H&R Block, a major life event such as divorce is going to have a significant impact on how you file your taxes. There are, however, certain steps you can take to reduce the chance of making tax errors on your annual return, which can lead to fines as well as unwanted attention from the Internal Revenue Service.

For example, one of the first steps you may want to take is to make sure that the U.S. Social Security Administration is aware of any name changes that occurred after divorce.. Additionally, you will want to ensure that the name the administration has for you matches the name you list on your tax return. Otherwise, you can anticipate unnecessary delays in processing your return. You and your former spouse should also determine which one of you is going to claim any children you share as a dependent on your tax return. Once you split, only one of you can claim each child.

You will also have to determine how any alimony arrangements you have in place will factor in when filing your taxes, and you will, too, need to make sure you are using the appropriate filing status when filing taxes post-divorce. Your marital status on the final day of the year will determine your filing status, come tax time. You can find more about navigating your way through divorce on our webpage.
