Falls the leading cause of fatal injury among older adults

As a Missouri senior, you may find that your level of mobility suffers as you age, and that you are not as steady on your feet as you once might have been. Nowadays, falls are the top cause of injuries and fatal injuries in older Americans, with one in four American seniors now suffering a serious fall every year. At Kelly, Symonds & Reed, LLC, we recognize that when seniors fall, serious repercussions can result, and we have helped many older Americans who fell because of another’s carelessness pursue solutions to meet their needs.

According to the National Council on Aging, falls are so common among your population that a senior suffers a fall serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit every 11 seconds. Furthermore, falls cause more than 27,000 deaths and 800,000 hospitalizations every year, with America’s emergency rooms treating 2.8 million fall-related injuries annually.

Because seniors are more prone to having certain risk factors for falls, such as vision issues, balance issues or surgeries, among many other potential fall causes, they are more likely to fall and injure themselves when environmental factors are present. For example, while a younger shopper may easily step around a cluttered store aisle or icy sidewalk, an aging American may not see the obstruction in his or her way, making him or her more likely to fall.

You may be able to mitigate your own risk of falling to some degree by making lifestyle changes. For example, exercising regularly may help you build strength and flexibility, which can reduce your fall risk. However, there is only so much you can do to prevent falls if other property owners fail to act responsibly and remove potential fall hazards before they affect you.
