Bed sore risks for nursing home residents

Leaving an elder loved one in the care of someone else is never easy, and you may know this all too well if you have ever had to place a parent or other family member in a Missouri nursing home or continuing care facility. Unfortunately, nursing home neglect is alive and well in America, and when nursing home residents do not get the level of care they deserve, serious consequences can result. Bed sores are one common consequence associated with nursing home neglect. At Kelly, Symonds & Reed, LLC, we recognize that bed sores can lead to potentially life-threatening complications, and we have helped many clients whose loved ones developed bed sores because of insufficient care pursue appropriate recourse.

Per the Mayo Clinic, bed sores, or pressure ulcers, often develop in people who have limited mobility, which is why they are common among residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Residents who have spinal cord injuries or medical conditions that can impact blood flow, such as heart disease or diabetes, also typically face a higher risk of bed sores, as do those with poor nutritional or dietary habits.

Bed sore risks rise considerably when immobile patients stay in the same position for extended periods, which is a regrettable, but common, occurrence at many nursing homes, and in some cases, a result of understaffing issues. Pressure ulcer risks also increase when facility residents have poor personal hygiene, which can be another indication of possible nursing home abuse or neglect.

While bed sores can prove uncomfortable and unsightly, they can also bring with them serious complications. Cancer, sepsis, cellulitis, and bone and joint infections are all possible complications associated with the development of bed sores. Find out more about this topic on our webpage.
