Why slips and falls are no laughing matter

We here at Kelly, Symonds & Reed, LLC, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, know all too well the serious injuries you can receive when you slip, trip or fall on someone else’s property. Unlike the carefully choreographed pratfalls that comedians take on TV shows and in the movies, a real slip-and-fall accident is nothing to laugh at. Your injuries could result in a long hospital stay, months of rehabilitation and other treatment, significant lost wages and possibly even a lifelong disability.

Your head is at particular risk when you fall because you usually have no way to prevent it from hitting the sidewalk, ground or other hard surface. As the Mayo Clinic explains, falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in which the blow to your head causes your brain to violently swing back and forth inside your skull, thereby injuring its cells, tissues and nerves. Such violent trauma can cause your brain to dysfunction.

Various symptoms

Each TBI is unique, and the symptoms your malfunctioning brain causes you to exhibit may be different than anyone else’s similar TBI. Nevertheless, common symptoms associated with TBIs include the following:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Frequent episodes of nausea and vomiting
  • Frequent difficulties with your memory and concentration
  • Frequent bouts of confusion and disorientation
  • Frequent mood swings, sometimes sudden and violent
  • Persistent anxiety, fear and/or depression

Unfortunately, your symptoms could appear at any time from immediately after your slip and fall to weeks later.

Extraordinary medical costs

Your medical costs can quickly mount when you suffer a TBI. Depending on which part(s) of your brain malfunction and the severity of your injury, you could incur medical and associated bills for the following:

  • Surgery
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Prescription medications
  • Long-term rehabilitation
  • Extended in-home or assisted living care

This is the summer fun season in Kansas City. When you join the thousands of people enjoying Royals games at Kauffman, attending concerts or preseason Chiefs games at Arrowhead, riding the roller coasters at Worlds of Fun or splashing around at Oceans of Fun or Schlitterbahn, remember to take care where you walk.
