How to manage spring break parenting time disputes

Spring break is just around the corner. And if you are planning a getaway with the kids, your checklist should be sharp and thorough. Indeed, hotel or Airbnb reservations should be made, packing should coincide with the weather forecast, and you should make sure that there are no delays or other issues that would lead to your vacation being derailed.

In essence, you should make sure that you have the time with the kids secured. This is especially important if your child custody or parenting time order decree does not make clear that you have spring break. While many parenting time plans detailed who has parenting time during federal holidays (i.e. Christmas, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving), spring break is not always clearly detailed, especially if you have preschoolers.

So if you get pushback over taking the kids out of town, consider these options before seeking court intervention.

Try a diplomatic approach - Remember the old saying, "you catch more flies with honey than salt?" Making threats or giving ultimatums are more likely to be met with an equal amount of resistance. Conversely, focusing on how much fun the kids will have, or how an overworked parent deserves a break may be better approach.

Be willing to mediate and compromise - Having a neutral third party to help work out your issues can help in maintaining a positive relationship (or at least to foster one). Also, mediation is cheaper and quicker than litigating your matter in court; and if you are required to do so before filing a motion, you may have no other choice.

If you have additional questions about parenting time disputes during spring break, an experienced family law attorney can advise you
