Do drug courts work?

If you are currently facing a Missouri drug charge, you may have valid concerns about having to potentially spend some time behind bars. Odds are, this is a fate you want to avoid by any means necessary, and depending on certain circumstances, you may be able to do so. Drug courts are a cost-effective, humane way to hold drug addicts accountable for their crimes without housing them behind bars, and if you can get into one, it may help you kick your drug addiction for good.

According to the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, drug courts have considerable positive effects not only on you, but on your community. Most drug court programs involve a combination of treatment, drug testing and regular appearances before a judge, and the strict nature of the program, combined with fear of the alternative, helps keep many addict criminal offenders from committing additional crimes.

In fact, an impressive 75 percent of all who effectively complete drug court programs keep themselves from getting rearrested for at least two years after completing the program. Additionally, if you participate in drug court and are also someone’s parent, your child has a better chance, statistically, of avoiding lengthy out-of-home placements than he or she would without your participation in drug court.

Drug courts are also highly cost-effective when compared with more traditional criminal sentencing options. So much so, in fact, that communities save between $3,000 and $13,000 for every person who effectively completes the program after considering expenditures such as prison housing and subsequent arrests.

While this information about drug courts is informative, it should not replace legal advice.
